There is no ONE way to run a Makerspace:
design a space that works for your school, your budget & your students.

Makerspaces can take on many forms.
Below are four possible formats to use as guide when starting or evolving your Elementary Makerspace.

Makerspace on wheels
A cart Makerspace is an excellent option for schools that don't have a room or space dedicated to making. A cart can also be moved from classroom to classroom making it accessible to all students. There are also some "big ticket" items that are kept in a safe place that can be requested by the students or put out by a teacher.

Dedicated makerspace
A room or larger area devoted specifically for a Makerspace is an ideal option that would allow you to have all or many of your materials and activities available at all times. Dedicated wall space would also give your the option to add bulletin boards, lego building walls and display space.
This example is from the Alexander Elementary Makerspace in Iowa City, IA. Students can sit at this counter space or move items to tables and the floor to create. |
Create & Store
This format would be ideal for schools where space is available to store materials but their schedule only allows for students to come to the Makerspace at designated times. Materials could be set out during specific club or creation times and put away after or students can retrieve materials from storage at needed.
This format also works with the challenge format, where you have a dedicated space but the materials are focused and rotate each week. |

Exploration stationsIf you don't have one larger space, exploration stations might be a good option for you. Think of exploration stations like centers that you can keep the same or change as needed. With this format you will need a few smaller areas where students can work and play.
